Off the Shoulder Top // Turquoise Ice Cream

I learned 3 things while wearing this outfit and shooting these photos: I don't look cute while eating an  ice cream cone (Tyra is currently yelling at me to eat pretty and smize), people think I'm pregnant in this skirt (keep in mind I live in Asia), and tassel earrings stick to you when you're dripping in sweat. Guess what? Don't care. I love this outfit and these photos. 

Especially obsessed with this top - I think I have nice shoulders (is that a weird thing to think…?) and when the off-the-shoulder trend came out, I was rejoicing from the rooftops. Okay, I'm exaggerating. But only a little. 

Btw, how fun is this wall? I wanted to wear an outfit that matched the spirit of a colorful paint-splatter mural. And a red and pink outfit just didn't push the fun envelope enough for me until I added the pops of turquoise (and the purple purse for good measure).

Gong Xi Fat Cai

Chinese New Year was a couple weeks ago and with the huge Chinese population (some are directly from China - called "Mainland" - others are of Chinese descent) in Singapore, I've been able to learn a bit about this important holiday. 

Chinese New Year is a big deal and Singapore gears up for it for weeks - there's lion dances in all the shopping malls, lanterns are hung, horoscopes predicting the next year are posted up, massive spring cleaning is underfoot, and mandarins are piled up waiting to be bought. 

For three days, families go all over the island visiting friends and family. They bring two mandarins for good luck and when they leave the house, they have to take two as well. The married adults give children ang pao - little red (or in my case, pink) envelopes filled with money. It is three days filled with good food (I've been nibbling on the left-over Chinese sweets at work all week!), good company and good wishes for the upcoming year. 

This outfit is my nod to Singaporean Chinese New Year. This top I found at my local thrift store and I cannot get over how adorable it is - it's got the cheongsam look with the high collar and chinese knot buttons - but with red polka dots!

I stuck on my chili crab pin I bought at the National Museum of Singapore. Chili crab is a national favorite dish. The best way I can describe is that it's crab with spicy spaghetti sauce covering it and served with delicious rolls to dip into the sauce. Mmmm! 

I got this beautiful red wrap skirt at Goodwill and immediately noticed the lovely high quality of it. It fit like a dream and I found the ribbon-tie detail so endearing. Wearing the lucky color red, I'm armed with the good luck of next year!

The Easy Breezy

My boyfriend described this outfit as "Elenore Roosevelt going to a rave." He's a self-proclaimed pop culture (and fashion) idiot but man, sometimes he is dead-on. I get a very 1940's vibe every time I wear this olive-green pencil skirt. As a last minute decision, I slipped on my peacock hair clip that I think really clinched the vintage feel. But with a little modern twist via my see-through lace top. 

I've only got three more days in Singapore before I'm back home in the sweet ol' state of Georiga. I can't wait to have some real winter posts up for y'all soon. Oh yeah, and to see all my family and friends of course!

The Librarian

Keiko Lynn and Gabi Fresh beat me to it but I'm gonna say it my own way, anyways: sometimes I wear clothes solely on how they make me feel, not how they make me look. This skirt is a wee too tight in the hips and gives me a bit of a pouch in the stomach from certain angles. But I love.it. I can't care that it's not always so flattering. It makes me happy. I love this particular shade of pale pink and besides the fact that the fit is a smidge tight, it actually fits! I've tried for years to find a thrifted pencil skirt (predominately from the 80's, it always seems. I think this was probably an 80's one as well) but my hips are too wide and my waist is too small to usually find one. Ironically, in Singapore of all places,  I've found three that have fit! I also got this blouse here in Singapore. The bright color and of course, the wide Peter Pan collar! It's too darling.

Another reason why I love this skirt is it feels like me (the whole photo shoot does!) I've always been very bookish. My mom read to me every night for as long as I could remember. When my brother was born, I spent many nights reading to him before bed as well. For me, reading was a way to connect with my family and I always associate it with love. It's always been an escape for me as well. When I moved to a new school in 5th grade, I was having a hard time adjusting. My teacher actually wrote my mom a note saying something along the lines of: "I don't normally discourage students from reading but Lindsey is reading so much that she is neglecting her studies and not interacting well with her peers." Whoops! Luckily, I eventually made friends in 6th grade. 

After living in Korea for 3 years, having a library down the road from me with FIVE floors of books in English is one of the most happiest feelings! The current book I'm reading is Shocked: My Mother, Schiaparelli, and Me by Patricia Volk. It's memoir about how fashionable her mother was in the 50's and how one of the most famous fashion designers of her time influenced her. Great read!
