Summer Chambray

Every girl should own a chambray dress - it's the little black dress of denim which means it goes with everything. And who doesn't want a no-brainer dress to wear? I love this one particularly because of the sweet, classic silhouette. The best way to spice up a simple dress is obviously with lots of accessories and I decided on a color-scheme to help me narrow down options: orange, blue and yellow.  A scarf in my hair, beaded necklace, a funky geometric belt and my adorbs polka dot loafers - ready to brave the weather of the tropics!

Hot & Humid Hearts on Bike Island

There are THREE exciting things I want to talk about in my post that I can't decide which to tell you first! One, I was talking to a friend of a friend about how my camera died and that I needed an upgrade. On the second time meeting me he pretty much gave me his camera! He said he never used it and whenever I decide I want a newer camera (his is a about 7 years old) I can give his back. How generous is that?! Plus he took the time to give me some pointers. So this post is dedicated to Blair. Everyone say thank you, Blair! 

I'm also thrilled to tell you about my favorite place in Singapore so far. It's a tiny little island on the east coast called Pulau Ubin or Bike Island. It's gorgeous and so unlike anywhere else in Singapore. Only about 100 people live on the island and there are no sky scrappers or modern buildings. It's quaint and quiet which are sometimes hard to come by in crowded Singapore. We rode around the entire island, stopped for a perfect picnic by the beach and finished the day by having a beer and chatting with the locals. The perfect day for me and my boo. ♥ ♥ ♥

And last but not least, we gotta talk about these shorts. I love love love high waisted shorts - always have. 3 years ago they were harder to come by, especially if you were as frugal as me. I found my uber-favorite pair in the form of mom-jeans at Goodwill but they aren't always so comfortable, especially if I gain a few lbs. These H&M ones though! They fit like a dream and are stretchy! They also didn't loose their shape even when I was sweating like a pig in 'em. Did I mention they were under $30...?

In Them Cut-Off Jeans

First of all, if you happen to love clever, witty, intelligent and funny women, you must run - not walk - to get How To Be A Woman. It's a similar vein to Tina Fey's Bossypants or Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out With Me? - part memoir, part essay and a full-on lady who doesn't take (too much) bullshit.

But I digress. This post isn't about one of my favorite books, it's about my favorite pair of shorts. Before I met my boyfriend, I could shimmy into these suckers no problem. But then, well... I disappeared and resurfaced too chubby to wear these. If I had to choose a trade-off, I'd always always choose fat and happy over distressed denim. Luckily though, I don't have to! When I came to Singapore, I picked back up one of my favorite hobbies - swimming. Once I realized I had lost a little weight these puppies were the first things I tried back on. They don't fit like exactly like they used to but I'm pretty darn pleased all the same! 

These shorts were a Goodwill find that were once very frumpy mom 1990's Calvin Klein shorts. Exhibit A below. I totally distressed the crap out of them and am so thrilled how they turned out!   

I got to admit, I sometimes feel a little funny wearing them, though. I think I look pretty darn good in them but I worry that someone will think, "Her thighs are too chubby to be wearing that." And then I just think... 

and I wear 'em anyway. 

P.S. I HAVE to tell you about my shoes even though I was a naughty blogger who didn't get a photo of them (I was rushing to do these photos before work). You can see a better shot of them on my instagram. They are not only so cute, and soooooo comfortable (they weren't kidding when they said these were made for barefootists), they're ethically made!

Rocking and Rolling Retro Denim-on-Denim

This outfit was too much fun to wear. And it all came together seamlessly. I wasn't trying to do a retro outfit today. I just knew I wanted to wear my jeans because it's cold! And my chambray shirt because apparently it's shaping up to be my errand shirt. I also wanted to wear my saddle shoes because I was feeling lazy - I just wanted cute, warm footwear. I put it all on and thought... 

Love when that happens! It's also convenient because the denim-on-denim look is totally rocking and rolling this fall. The trick is to do different colors and materials. The chambray top is lighter in color and material than the blue jeans, so it's A-okay. 

My hair was being stupid today so I decided to stop fighting with it and do the good ol' bun and then put on the vintage-inspired headband. I was originally going to just wear the chambray shirt loose but to go with the retro theme, I tied it at the waist and rolled up the jeans at the bottom. To finish the look I put on my new heart earrings and red lipstick. I went with my "no make-up" make-up look because I was too lazy to do the extra eyeliner and such. And then I ran out the door to grocery shopping and other grown-up-ish errands. Now, where's the sock hop?!
