3 Last Minute Fool-Proof Valentine's Gifts for Her

Valentine's day might be over-commericalized and very unimportant in the grand scene of things. But I can't help but think that's it's nice to have a day where you stop running the rat race and try and make your partner's day a little bit brighter. Sure, you shouldn't just do it on a holiday but it doing so on Valentine's day won't take away any brownie points either!
1. Jewelry: Don't panic, folks. I'm not saying get her the million dollar diamond studs. Also, shopping for jewelry for someone else can be a bit intimidating for anyone. My suggestion: go simple and small. I'd confidently say that 98% of girls that wears ANY kind of jewelry - regardless of her taste - would wear a necklace. And the best way to win her heart? Choose something personalized. With this awesome thing called the internet, you can find any kind of charm on a necklace. Does she like origami, French history, Harry Potter, Cinderella, her home state, or Daryl from The Walking Dead

Well, then I got ya covered! My suggestion is google this formula: what she likes + necklace + etsy. Etsy.com is a great website of handmade, quirky, and personalized products.
2. Perfume: Again, perfume tends to be a personal thing that can be difficult to pick out for someone. However, I believe that most women that wear any kind of body spray, perfume, scented lotions or specialized soaps would enjoy this kind of gift. Just peek into her bathroom - does she have any of this stuff and does she USE it? I do caution you though, this can be a popular gift so if she has more than 6 bottles of perfume, I would say don't bother getting her a new one. For me, perfume isn't something that I would personally buy for myself but I love getting it as a gift and I like changing scents to fit my mood.
Again, this is a great time to personalize. But you get to personalize it to YOUR preference! Test out a bunch of perfumes and narrow down to 2-3 scents that YOU enjoy and think would be nice on your girlfriend. Then find a lady. A sales clerk, a friendly female shopper. Ask them which scent do they like more. If you wanna go crazy, ask a couple people and take a tally. This part can tend to be a little tricky because everyone's nose is different so take it with a grain of salt. But, this will allow you to get a female's/other perspective, just in case. An added suggestion would be when you write in the card, tell her why you choose that perfume. It smells like sunflowers, which you know is her favorite flower. Or it smells a little spicy, just like her personality. Yes, it's cheesy. But if you can't be cheesy and lovey-dovey on Valentine's day, when can you?

Also, perfume doesn't have to break the bank. Bath and Body Works, Victoria's Secret, The Body Shop, Kohl's, Marshall's, Skin Food, and countless others all have scents under $30.

3. A Personalized Date - Some people aren't gift-givers (or gift-takers) and I think that's okay! Don't feel pressured to buy her gift because everyone else is and marketers are pushing Valentine's on you. Maybe the bank won't cover it this month or maybe she's a minimalist or concerned about her ecological footprint (wish I was better at both!) While you shouldn't have to buy her gift, I think it is nice to do something for her. And one of the best gifts is your time. Has she been dying to see the new art exhibit in town? What's her favorite park? Has she been talking about exploring a new part of the city? And I'm not talking your regular Chilli's dinner and a movie date (not that I don't like those!) But I'm saying - think outside the box a little. Also, listen to her. If you do, she'll probably give you an idea and she didn't even realize she was!
I personally think a picnic (outside or inside!) is a very cute and easy way create a date just for her. The planning and effort you take into preparing for the food and extra accessories before hand will really impress her. I found a great list over at Premeditated Leftovers on how to host the perfect (cheap!) picnic.

One more thing! This may sound silly but I believe presentation of the gift is almost as important. But it's really, really easy. Many places like Victoria's Secret and Etsy stores will wrap your purchase beautifully so no worries. But if you're going to Kohl's or Marshall's, they will not. Just pop into your dollar store, Wal-mart, Hallmark or the equivalent of. Buy a gift bag and tissue paper that matches the bag. Yes, BUY THE TISSUE PAPER. Wrap the gift in the paper and put it at the bottom of the bag. Then on top of the tissue-wrapped present, put in 2-3 more pieces of tissue and fluff it. Make sure it is sticking out a little bit out of the bag. Like so:
If you wanna go crazy, stick a bow on the side of the bag or tie ribbon on the handles. Then buy or make her a card. Add a personalized message about how much you love and appreciate her. Maybe a favorite memory of the two of you. Write the date on the top (she might want to keep it and remember your first Valentine's together). Put that card in an envelope and write her name on the outside. Stick the card into the side of the bag and make sure it's peeking out. Voila! You're done! So easy, right?

At the end of the day, it's not important how much money you spent on her. What she really will be impressed with is how much time, effort and thought you put into selecting something just for her. Any guy can run into the store at midnight and grab a box of chocolate. But she'll smile when you tell her your epic story about how you chose your gift because it reminded you of HER.

Instagram Travel Photo Journal

This is my last post about my trip to Thailand last week. I recently got a new phone (HTC One) which I LOVE and what better way to get acquainted with a new camera than by taking ten million photos of vacation? Here are some of my favorite photos. To see more of the vacation or what I do on a regular basis as an expat, go to http://followgram.me/lindseydish (on your computer) or http://instagram.com/lindseydish (on your phone).

1. Best way to travel in an airport - super duper light!
2. The restaurant attached to our bungalows had all these cool skulls decorated everywhere. And they still had all their christmas and new year's decorations up. I loved it!
3. The view from our breakfast table.
4. No question about it - this pale irish girl's gotta have a sunhat ALWAYS.
5. Mandatory beach sunset.
6. Everywhere around Koh Lanta is hand painted signs. It gives the island a very kitschy, crafty feel. Good stuff.
7. Me and my boo enjoying midday cocktails - that's what ya gotta do on vacation!
8. Another view of "our" restaurant - lounge pillow-chairs and a great beach view.
9. Oh, ya know. Just another gorgeous beach sunset.
1. Our 10th time scuba diving!
2. One of the best things about scuba diving is getting to hang on the boat all day - and watch other boats go by!
3. Not on an actual instagram photo, just regrammed from one of the professional divers that accompanied us on our dive.
4. Our dive had beautiful rocks, caves and cliffs above and below the water.
5. Hanging on the boat.
6. Our boat broke down, so we took many, many naps.
7. Starting the 2nd morning by laying by the pool.
8. All the swim suits! Cheap shopping in Thailand.

Waiting for the Ship to Come in

I am so proud of these photos because they display my boyfriend's abilities and his utter affection for me. When we started dating, I didn't have my blog yet. He didn't exactly know what he was getting himself into when he said he'd snap off some photos for me. At times I can be a very uhh... demanding and vocal "collaborator" when I ask him to take photos. But he has taken it all in stride, been so patient and a quick study (on top of being supportive). Neither of us knew the talent he had sitting under the surface. Now I just need to work on my editing skills!

He took these pictures when we were on motorbike ride around Koh Lanta, Thailand (one of my favorite things to do on vacation) before we had our last dinner on the island. It really incorporates the romantic feel of 2 of my favorite things: long skirts and the ocean. I've been wanting to try out crop top trend and I figured a beach town was the best place to test-drive it - no one would bat an eye at showing off some extra skin. I got to say, I really loved how this outfit turned into a mix of something romantic, trendy, vintage-y, and modern all rolled into one.

My crop top was originally one of those too-short-for-a-dress-but-too-long-for-a-shirt kinda things but the skirt part had a big hole on it. I cut it right under the elastic waist hem because I couldn't bare to throw out that beautiful lace detailing. I might eventually just cut out the lace and use it for something else. What do you think I should do with it?

Living in a Life Magazine: Swimsuit for the Curvy Vintage Lover

I have been obsessed with vintage 50's/60's swimsuits for as long as I can remember. I never felt comfortable in a tiny bikini no matter what size I was - bottoms just never covered my bottom! So when the high-waisted bottoms became a trend - a more accessible one than just buying an actual vintage swimsuit, I had had HAD to find one. Which was not as easy as you might think.

But I ended up lucking out sooo very well. I got this entire suit at Target! The bottoms are made by ASSETS which honestly, I thought looked like it was marketed towards plus-size matronly ladies. I wanted the bottoms to be high-waisted but not dumpy-looking. And I am about one size under plus-size, which as far as adorable swimsuits are concerned, is kind of a bummer because there are a lot of adorable ones I've found online that are exactly what I was looking for! So I tried on these bottoms but I figured they'd be a little too big in size or a little too big in granny-coverage. Well, hot dog if they weren't exactly what I was looking for! I'm a size 8 and I ended up getting the XL. My only complaint about the suit bottoms is that the material is a little strange for putting on sunscreen - the white shows up on it. So I recommend putting sun screen on before you put on the suit. They still have the bottoms up on Target's website (and they're in spa blue as well, I see!)

The top is from Mossimo, which I'm sorry to say is no longer on the Target website. I wanted to get a suit top that had underwire and push-up padding. Yup, I wanted bigger bazookas. Not because I wanted a more sexy swim suit (although that might be an added perk) but because I wanted to balance out my larger lower half and enhance my little upper-half. I was tired of those little triangle clothes that did nothing to help me out. I love how the black and white stripes adds to the vintage feel, almost giving it a nautical vibe. However, I'm not sure if I would ever get a black and white bathing suit ever again. The chlorine turns the white yellow and it's a chore to try and keep the white fresh when you swim as much as I do. This top will probably have to go soon, but the good news is my bottoms can stay - they match everything!!

oh and p.s. - the entire swim suit was $50!

This is probably the first swim suit I've ever owned where I feel 100% comfortable in my body and I feel like I look great. I've tried the tankini thing but while I am comfortable in it, I feel like I look slumpy and boring - not my style at all. But with this, I feel like everything I want covered is, I don't have to worry about alway sucking in my stomach, having my lil belly hang out unflatteringly or mooning someone - the swimsuit just makes sure it's right where it needs to be at all times. I don't think I will ever go back to regular bottoms - it's too much fun feeling like you're in a Life magazine!

I think every girl deserves a swim suit where she says to herself, Heck yeeeeah, I look goooood! I hope you find one that works for you! Would you ever wear high-waisted swim suit bottoms?

The Siren on Your Ship

This past week, my boyfriend and I snuck away to Thailand for Chinese New Year. Packing for short beach trip is the most fun packing experience EVER. Usually I pack for longer trips where I have to carry and live out my backpack for weeks on end. It's amazing to go on extended trips but you don't get to pack the cute stuff - only the essentials. For this trip, I just threw in long, flowy skirts, swim suits and sunscreen into my boyfriend's backpack. The only thing I carried was my tote bag! (It's the most luxurious feeling in the world, by the way).

In these pictures, I'm wearing the outfit I chose to travel in: from airplane, to mini van, to ferry for a total travel time of maybe 6 hours. First off, y'all know how much I love maxis. I swear by them. They are PERFECTPERFECTPERFECT for traveling. If you get cold on the plane, you tuck them around you. If you get hot, you hike it up. It's loose and comfortable but with the right accessories, you can change from stroll on the beach look to a night on the town. This skirt is my ultimate favorite thing I own, if you didn't already know. It's gone through a lot and on this trip is was no different - it mysteriously got a rip in it! It desperately needs the loving care of a dry cleaners.

The skirt was particularly playful to wear on this boat. The wind was stirring it up like crazy! Who doesn't love having a Marilyn moment? We took the ferry to Koh Lanta right as the sun was setting. Gorgeous way to start our vacation! Koh Lanta is a beautiful, sleepy little island a couple hours away from Krabi airport. Touristy enough to be comfortable but none of the crazy, annoying shenanigans. Stay tuned to see the other things I packed in my his backpack!
